The Stockyards will be jumping October 28-30 during the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering, making it a perfect time for families attending the festival to visit John Wayne: An American Experience. On October 29, the 10,000-square-foot exhibit is hosting a day full of activities to coincide with the Gathering that include a coffee tasting, Stetson pop-up shop, book-signing and spirits tasting inside John Wayne Stock & Supply, the flagship retail store located at the Experience.
The day kicks off with a tasting of Gold Handle Coffee, a series of carefully curated blends named after a traditional gift presented by legendary actor John Wayne. During the making of his films, John Wayne gave each of his cast and crew members a personalized Gold Handle mug as a token of appreciation. The Duke's generous and unique tradition was celebrated through these collectible mugs and his love of sharing coffee with friends. Gold Handle Coffee was born of that tradition. The tasting will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
At the same time, legendary Western-wear maker Stetson will be on-site with a Stetson X John Wayne hat personalization pop-up with Stetson Head Designer Claudia Medina. The collection features hats that are reminiscent of those worn by John Wayne in countless movies.
From 3 to 6 p.m., Marisa Wayne, John Wayne's youngest daughter, will make an appearance to sign advance copies of John Wayne: The Official Cocktail Book, which doesn't officially hit bookstores until November 1. The book features more than 70 recipes inspired by the life and legacy of The Duke. The collection takes cocktail aficionados on a trip through some of John Wayne's most memorable films, with drinks inspired by Rooster Cogburn, Davy Crockett, and other characters associated with the actor.
Test out some of those recipes with Duke Spirits. The Duke once told his son, Ethan Wayne, that he wanted to create his own liquor lines. Years after his father's death, Ethan discovered a wooden vault containing an archive, a message, and a reserve of bottles dating back to 1962. With this in hand, Duke Spirits, led by vintner and distiller Chris Radomski, brought the recipes and history back to life through award-winning bourbon, rye, and tequila offerings. Duke Spirits will be sampling some of its bourbons and tequilas along with some recipes from John Wayne: The Official Cocktail Book, in John Wayne Stock & Supply from 1 to 4 p.m.
While enjoying the activities, guests are invited to buy tickets to tour John Wayne: An American Experience. The exhibit is structured to give guests an intimate tour of the life of John Wayne. Patrons of the exhibit have exclusive access to never-before-seen memorabilia, family photos, and correspondence that have been thoughtfully curated by the Wayne family to give guests a holistic view of the icon, whose values translate both on and off the silver screen.
