Palo Duro Canyon is often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Texas” and is the second largest canyon in the United States due to its size and geological features such as layers of multicolored rock, steep mesa walls, and hoodoos like the famous Lighthouse Peak.
Canyon area activities include hiking, sightseeing, mountain biking, nature viewing, and picnicking along with park-provided educational programming and much more. Old West Stables offers guided horseback riding tours, the Wildlife Viewing Blind provides a quiet place for bird watching, and tent sites and cabin rentals are available for camping. The park’s visitor center houses a museum store containing books, pottery, jewelry, and other canyon-related items.
Palo Duro Canyon Sate Park is also home to the internationally-known, award-winning, outdoor musical TEXAS, the official play of the state of Texas.
