Cafe 43 at the George W. Bush Presidential Center epitomizes Dallas dining in many ways. This full-service restaurant (named in reference to the 43rd President of the United States) features beautiful large-scale artwork, indoor and outdoor seating, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the native prairie-style Texas landscaping, and an upscale but hospitable atmosphere that is surely fitting with the desire of former First Lady Laura Bush that the space be comfortable and not overly pretentious.
To provide patrons with foods that are exceptional yet familiar, Dallas-based food and beverage management company Culinaire operates Cafe 43 utilizing an accomplished team of chefs along with a friendly staff with a keen attention to detail. Using organic and local foods when possible (and Texan when not local), the varied lunch-only menu contains a substantial selection of offerings in a reasonable price range.
The full menu can be found online, but a few delicious highlights we enjoyed include:
-
Homemade-from-scratch ricotta cheese with tomatoes and black olive tapenade on a crisp crostini.
-
A different interpretation of the turkey cobb salad made from sous-vide cooked brined turkey served with fried green tomatoes and topped with premier 100% scratch buttermilk herb dressing.
-
The very popular slow-cooked pulled BBQ pork sandwich with smoky BBQ sauce and homemade pickled cabbage on a cheddar jalapeno bun served with a choice of seasonal fruit or fresh cut Kennebec fries.
-
Tender and flavorful arctic char fish atop corn and sweet pea succotash, andouille sausage, and micro arugula with creole vinaigrette.
-
Griddled carrot cake gently pressed in a Panini maker with cardamom-infused cream cheese frosting.
Vegetarian options include the wide hand-cut pappardelle noodles with sauteed seasonal vegetables such as mushrooms, asparagus, and tomato, topped with pecorino cheese. Naturally, homemade ice cream and sorbet are also made daily at Cafe 43 because after all, the word 'round the dining room is that George W. Bush is into vanilla ice cream.
