Okay, full disclosure: I had extremely high expectations for The Bodyguard which opened this week at the Music Hall at Fair Park. The stage production is adapted from one of my all-time favorite movies, and the concept of celebrities playing celebrities (as opposed to kittens inspired by kittens) was quite intriguing for a number of reasons.
First of all, Grammy® Award-nominated and multi-platinum R&B/pop recording artist and film/TV actress Deborah Cox portrays superstar entertainer Rachel Marron whose personal life is intruded upon by an unknown stalker. And secondly, the role of former Secret Service agent-turned-bodyguard Frank Farmer is played by television star Judson Mills who is known for his roles in feature films and shows like As the World Turns; Walker, Texas Ranger; Westworld; and more.
Dallas Summer Musicals caps off its 2016/2017 season with this romantic thriller based on Lawrence Kasdan's 1992 Oscar-nominated film. With some minor modifications to the classic storyline, the show starts off with a bang (literally) and thereby successfully catapults viewers right into the midst of suspenseful concert-style action complete with flashy lighting, sexy costumes, high-energy choreography, and simply outstanding vocals. Solid acting performances are offered by supporting cast members including Alex Corrado as security guard Tony Scibelli, Charles Gray as manager Bill Devaney, Jonathan Hadley as publicist Sy Spector, and Willie Dee (on press night) as the Stalker. Actress Jasmin Richardson as Rachel's sister Nicki Marron stands out with additional show-stopping vocals, and Kevelin B. Jones III makes a strong 'triple threat' mark onstage as Rachel's son Fletcher (alternately played by Broadway's young Douglas Baldeo).
A nominee for four Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical and Best Set Design and winner of Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage Awards, The Bodyguard is a lively showcase of highly-talented singers performing well-known favorites like So Emotional,
One Moment in Time,
Saving All My Love,
and I Will Always Love You
(one of the biggest-selling songs of all time). Throw in a suspenseful plot, thought-provoking character development, and laugh-out-loud comedy via a hilarious added scene which takes place at a karaoke bar, and you've got the elements of this very successful musical which simultaneously serves as a touching remembrance of the late Whitney Houston.
The first U.S. national tour of The Bodyguard is playing at Dallas Summer Musicals now through Sunday, July 30, 2017 before heading over to Fort Worth's Bass Performance Hall to run August 1-6, 2017.* The show is well worth the ticket price which starts at a mere $25.00, so be sure to bring along a companion because during the finale number, [You'll] Wanna Dance with Somebody.
