Teaching Children to Appreciate the Finer Things in Life

Exposing children to the arts, good food, and nature can help them understand the importance of beauty and quality.

Teaching Children to Appreciate the Finer Things in Life

In a world where children are constantly bombarded with messages to buy more, have the newest gadget, and be the best at everything they do, it can be hard to teach them to appreciate the finer things in life. But it is important to do so. Teaching our children to enjoy the arts, good food, and beautiful things will help them develop a sense of refinement and taste that is so often lacking in today's society. Consider these ways to teach your children the importance of appreciating beauty and quality.

1. Expose Them to the Arts

Take your children to see a play, an art museum, or a ballet. Discuss with them what you liked about the experience and why you think it is important to appreciate the arts. In addition, try to introduce them to as many different types of art as possible. The more exposure they have, the more likely they will find something they enjoy and appreciate. Some places you could take them include:

Theater
Take them to see a play at a local theater. Many theatres have children's productions that are perfect for introducing your child to live theatre. You could also try taking them to a movie at an independent cinema specialising in art films.
Museums
Visit a nearby museum with your child. Talk about the different paintings, sculptures, and other works of art that you see. Freddi Wald is someone that could assist you in explaining to them why you think the artist created the piece and what it means to you, and the value of museums and the necessity thereof for the future.
Ballet
Attend a ballet performance with your child. Discuss the beauty of the dancers and the music. You could also look up videos of ballets online and watch them together.

2. Teach Them About Good Food

There is so much more to food than just what tastes good. Help your children understand where their food comes from, how it is prepared, and why certain foods are better for them than others. Also, take them out to eat at excellent restaurants on occasion and let them experience different cuisines. If you instil a love of good food in your children, they will be more likely to appreciate it as they get older.

3. Cook Together

Instead of serving your children processed or fast food, take some time to cook a healthy meal together. Please talk about the different flavours and textures of the ingredients and how they come together to create a delicious dish.

4. Go on Nature Walks

Get outside and show your children the beauty of nature. Point out the different colours and shapes of leaves, flowers, and trees. Explain how the weather affects plants' appearance and how animals rely on them for food. Helping your children to appreciate the natural world will instil in them a respect for all of God's creations.

5) Read Together

Books are a great way to introduce your children to new ideas and worlds. Read aloud to them, or have them read to you. As you read, discuss the characters, plot, and setting with them. Help them understand how the story is relevant to their life experiences. In addition, reading is a great way to bond with your children and teach them about different cultures and lifestyles.

Teaching our children to appreciate the finer things in life is important. It will help them develop a sense of refinement and taste that is so often lacking in today's society. Exposing them to the arts, good food, and nature can help them understand the importance of beauty and quality. And, by teaching them to cook, read, and go on nature walks together, we can instil in them a love for the simple things in life that are so often taken for granted.
