2020 Mazda6: The Shape of Things

The combination of attractive shape, rich color, and complex texture successfully achieves mature elegance.

I'm in love with the shape of you, Ed Sheeran croons in his recent Grammy Award-winning song, thereby supporting the notion that just-the-right curves can often evoke all-the-right emotions. Similarly, the 2020 Mazda6 takes the Kodo—Soul of Motion design language a step further by adding an enhanced level of sophistication focused on revitalized style, passion, and mature elegance.

Experienced artisans and veteran craftsmen have built upon the already-successful and widely-acclaimed sedan to continue moving Mazda6 closer to an ideal state of perfection. From its power moonroof and gunmetal front grille to its bright silver 19-inch wheels and new signature badge on the trunk, Mazda's flagship midsize sedan still holds its place as one of the sportier options in the midsize sedan segment. Meticulously working toward expressing a sense of motion even when the vehicle is at a standstill, designers and engineers have imbued each of the brand's models with its own individual personality while simultaneously maintaining a unified theme across the entire line as a whole.

Despite advances in computer-aided design which can render 3D models with an extremely high level of accuracy, the design process at Mazda first starts with a block of clay. This exploratory preparation consists of experimenting with organic forms made up of various substances as well as shaping the clay until uniquely-appealing lines begin to reveal themselves. The intertwined traditional/digital partnership combines the best of both worlds as form becomes a natural outcropping of function and subsequently sparks emotion from the core.

As designer Takashi Okamura has described, The combination of attractiveness of shape, richness of color, and complexity of texture results in an object that can be universally considered beautiful. As materials designers, our challenge is to bring these three elements together—our design is, above everything, human-centric and we want our customers to feel the human touch throughout the interior.

Jinba Ittai, or horse and rider as one, encapsulates one of Mazda's main design themes and has come to be used as an expression of the sense of connection between car and driver. Since it is believed that an ideal driving position not only creates a more exhilarating driving experience but also adds comfort and helps improve driver safety, human-centric design principles are intentionally incorporated as a major component to achieving the essential philosophy.

Mazda engineers studied human walking patterns prior to installing wider seats constructed with high-density, vibration-absorbing urethane foam designed to encourage the natural S-shape of the human spine. The natural driving position not only improves comfort but also allows for more control of the car, less mental distractions, and maximum awareness of situational references. This sense of enveloping comfort aims to result in less fatigue so that drivers and passengers feel better getting out of the vehicle than when they got in.

The 2020 Mazda6 is engineered to deliver pure driving joy and outfitted with an indulgent interior space containing intuitively-placed controls which are meticulously designed to be pleasing to the touch. Utilizing alluring design to convey soul and personality, Mazda designers have taken great pride in every aspect of production and have crafted a vehicle that can no doubt be considered shipshape.
