Forty-nine currently-active members of the Texas Auto Writers Association spent two days at Eagles Canyon Raceway on April 16-17 to participate in the organization's annual Auto Roundup. The diverse group of experienced journalists provides media coverage for the automotive industry via print, digital, and broadcast outlets across the United States. Forty-six of the latest cars and utility vehicles on the market were evaluated in side-by-side comparisons utilizing a series of exercises on the 2.5-mile racetrack in Decatur, Texas. In addition to SMDI's title sponsorship, the 2018 event also was supported by Wieck Media plus Polaris Slingshot who provided test-driving opportunities in their street-legal, open-air, three-wheeled roadsters.
A simulation of real-world road conditions included slalom, acceleration, and braking tests along the 70 feet of elevation changes, strategic cornering, and graduated climbs. Judging categories consisted of exterior styling, interior comfort, vehicle performance, marketplace value, and overall personal appeal. Auto manufacturer representatives were also on hand to showcase the latest industry innovations, demonstrate updated vehicle features, and answer any questions or concerns before voters cast their ballots to determine the best-in-class for various category awards as well as the Car of Texas.
Ultimately, the 2018 Lexus LC 500 was crowned the overall Car of Texas and the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica took home the top award for the Family Car of Texas. Our journalists had a clear decision after driving vehicles at a new venue this year,
stated TAWA President Michael Marrs. They thought the new Lexus LC stood out among the competitors for its eye-catching looks and refined but muscular performance on the track.
