Camping is a unique way to enjoy the fantastic scenery, be close to nature and be self-sufficient. It's not for everyone, but many who try camping fall in love with it forever. When planning your first camping trip, you need to make sure you've got all the right gear for the trip, or you're going to find it pretty miserable. Once you've got everything you need, get ready for outdoor adventures.
A Tent
No surprise, here. You're going to need a good tent to sleep in and take shelter from the elements should the weather turn. The good news is that tent design has come a long way from when you were a kid and there are a number of lightweight, protective and durable tents to choose from. Decide on how much space you'd like in the tent, you can pick a simple two-person shelter of a large family-style tent with room to stand up. Before you set off on your trip, make sure you practice putting it up first, you don't want to be wrestling with it in a dark field or when there's a sudden storm.
A Fire Starter
Even if you aren't going to be singing songs around a campfire, it's always a good idea to carry something capable of starting a fire should you need to. Standard lighters are a popular choice but can be unreliable in bad weather. Instead, try magnesium fire starters which can light in almost any weather conditions and are reusable. They're favored by survivalists and the military, so you know they're going to work.
Warm and Waterproof Clothing
You won't have the luxury of a suitcase full of clothes when you're camping so you need to make sure that you've got some good waterproof clothing that's going to keep you nice and toasty. Walking around in wet or damp clothing is going to turn your holiday very unpleasant, fast. If you're camping in colder temperatures, it's even more important. A good, roomy rain jacket is great for putting on over bulkier clothing. Also, invest in a waterproof backpack or a separate waterproof cover for your existing bag.
Sleeping Bag
Even if you're camping at the height of summer, temperatures will drop at night. In some parts of the country, there can be a difference of almost 20 degrees celsius. Even if the temperature is warm at night, a sleeping bag can protect you from any insects or other creepy crawlies that are much more likely to come out a night. Like tents, sleeping bags have improved a lot over the years, with space-age materials being used to create very thin, light sleeping bags, that will keep you warm at very low temperatures.
Navigation Equipment
Google Maps aren't going to cut it on your camping trip. If you intend to do any type of walking or hiking, carry a map of the area with you and a compass. There are even low costs GPS devices you can buy for greater accuracy. Hopefully, you won't need to use them, but if you get lost or disorientated when you're out walking, you'll be able to safely find your way back.
Water Bottles and Filters
A good supply of water is vital, so make sure that you take enough with you in a sturdy water bottle. A water purification straw or tablets can also be used if you run out of the water and need to use a natural water source.
First Aid Kit
A well-stocked first-aid kit can deal with the majority of medical needs when you're camping. You'll need plasters, bandages, antiseptic, gauze and scissors. An emergency whistle is also a good idea in case you get into trouble. Brush up on your emergency first aid knowledge before you go too.
A Multitool
A good multitool is a great addition to any camping trip. It's light but packs so many useful gadgets including knives, screwdrivers, scissors, and files.
A Flashlight
If you are walking at night, or need to find your way around your campsite after dark, then you're going to need a good flashlight. Find a small, portable, but powerful one that will give you maximum visibility in the dark. You might even look at getting one you can attach to your jacket or hat, that way your hands will be free.
This isn't a definitive list but does go through the essentials you'll need to keep you safe, warm and able to enjoy your experience. Camping is such a beautiful way to experience the world, and there are thousands of places you can visit. Once you get started, you'll be hooked, it's the ultimate road trip.
