At this fun event organized by the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), teams of architects, designers, engineers, and contractors compete each year (generally the first Saturday in June) vying to win the prestigious 'Golden Bucket' award. Sandcastles are rated on originality of concept, artistic execution of the concept, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site. You may bring your own picnic, and consumption of alcohol is allowed in Apffel Park / East Beach.
