The Gladys Porter Zoo is a “visitor-oriented zoological and botanical park, dedicated to the preservation of nature through education, conservation and research.” The world-class facility is named after Gladys Porter (the daughter of Earl C. Sams, former president of JCPenney) who became acutely interested in wildlife when she and her husband, Dean, traveled extensively in Africa and other countries. She was closely involved in the development of the zoo which was entirely funded by the Earl C. Sams Foundation and then given to the city of Brownsville.
