2024 Subaru Impreza RS Is Reviving Sport Performance

With a rich history spanning 30 years, the new sixth-generation Impreza revives enthusiasm with the return of the RS model.

Subaru has been producing the Impreza for over three decades dating back to 1992. It was a replacement for the outgoing Subaru Leone (Lion) which got its first start back in 1971. The Impreza started as a 5-door wagon and was subsequently replaced by the 5-door hatchback in 2008. There was also a coupe version produced from 1995 to 2001. In the thirty-plus years the Impreza has roamed the streets it can certainly be said it has successfully evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of the consumer.

In 2017, the new-gen five Impreza received a dramatic change to its platform with the all-new and innovative Subaru Global Platform. This platform was so versatile it was utilized by both the sedan and hatch versions of the Impreza. The upgrade was so substantial it provided a 70% to 100% increase in chassis rigidity compared to previous Imprezas. The center of gravity was also lowered by 0.2 inches and roughly 95% of the components in the new platform were entirely new compared to the fourth-generation platform. The platform also boasted larger dimensions, featuring increased length and width along with a lengthier wheelbase. The extension in the wheelbase was transferred to the interior for segment-leading passenger space and legroom for both front and rear occupants.

Press Loan

My press loan for the week was the sixth-generation Subaru Impreza RS 5-Door hatchback. The resurgence of the Impreza RS brings back the brand's coveted enthusiast-centric trim level while rekindling a legacy that began in 1998. The new RS model comes standard with a beefy 2.5-liter BOXER engine that works seamlessly with the innovative Lineartronic CVT and features an 8-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters. The turbo-less BOXER engine produces an impressive 182 horsepower and 178 lb.-ft. of torque which is more than enough power to get up to and maintain Texas interstate speeds.

I was able to test drive the RS on a 'three-hour tour' to a lake in central Texas and back. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by its ample giddy up-and-go on the interstate. I guess I have become a bit of a turbo-hybrid snob, so congrats to the Subaru engine developers for reminding me of my younger years when horsepower creation was an art. Also, the RS pulled off an impressive non-hybrid MPG of almost 35 MPGs on the interstate.

Enhanced Chassis Dynamic

For 2024, the Impreza RS will feature another 10-percent increase in torsional rigidity to the already impressive chassis upgrade with the new Subaru Global Platform the Impreza received just a few short years ago. This enhancement is accomplished by the integration of a full inner frame construction and the utilization of additional structural adhesive. These additions result in more body rigidity and reduced overall weight. What it means to the driver and passengers is enhanced dynamic performance, a smoother ride, and a quieter cabin for an improved driving experience.

RS Interior

Most people have heard the saying 'less is more' which is taught to first-year painting students. I believe the interior design engineers for the RS nailed the interior and deserve applause for achieving a great sport look without going overboard. When you climb in, the RS you immediately notice uncluttered and clean lines with the gunmetal and simulated carbon fiber accents that complement the sport front seats that are cloaked in black and gray cloth with striking red cloth bolsters. The RS logo-adorned carpeted floormats, aluminum alloy pedals and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter further reinforce the model's identity. Power Moonroof. Need I say more?

RS Exterior Features

The RS exterior trim is characterized by its 18-inch alloy wheels with a sophisticated dark gray finish and skillfully calibrated sport-tuned suspension, prioritizing exceptional performance and precise handling. Other notable exterior enhancements include distinctive RS badging on both the front doors and rear hatch, sleek, captivating black treatment on the front grille, side spoilers, and side mirrors, as well as upgraded LED headlights and LED fog lights that collectively underscore the RS model's unique and dynamic aesthetic.

Safety

Standard on all 2024 Impreza models is the latest version of the award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. The enhanced system operates smoother, faster, and under a greater range of conditions. These improvements are thanks to a wider field of view, updated control software, and the addition of an electric brake booster. EyeSight can now identify bicycles and pedestrians at intersections sooner and, when necessary, alerts the driver and applies brakes to avoid collisions.

I never look at a vehicle's Monroney sticker price until I sit down and write about it. When I saw the price for this fully loaded RS Impreza, I just about fell out of my seat. In my opinion, , this vehicle is an absolute steal at $31,045. It is great looking with plenty of interior space for adults and luggage or a family and camping gear. It gets great gas mileage and has plenty of power. It's a Subaru, so you know it is safe with decades of safety awards. If you are looking for a vehicle that will get you to point A and back with a fun sporty attitude, go test drive the Impreza RS. I only wish I would have had a 10-hour round trip scheduled the week I had it because it would have been a great time.
