Unveiling the fifth-generation Lexus RX, the 500h F-Sport AWD redefines luxury and performance.
The Lexus RX CUV was considered a category disrupter in 1998 when released as the first-ever luxury crossover. The RX and the LX combined the best features of a luxury sedan and a sport utility vehicle surpassing all luxury competitors, a first for any international automaker. Seems funny today to think that was even a big deal. Today's fifth-generation RX, which is slotted between the Lexus LX and GX still embodies the perfect blend of cutting-edge technology, exquisite design, and unparalleled performance. The all-new wheels to the roof rails redesign of the new RX was done to apeal to the different tastes and styles of buyers who are looking for a new luxury SUV.
One major change for the redesigned RX was to move it to the highly successful GA-K platform. This platform change provides RX buyers with more options as they can now choose from four separate models, the RX 350, RX 350h, RX 450h+, and RX 500h F Sport Performance AWD. There will also be four resigned powertrains options, with three being electrified powertrains. The move to the GA-K platform will maintain the RX's overall length of former models but will add almost 21/2 inches to the wheelbase. The switch to the GA-K platform will also result in a lower overall weight of roughly 200lbs, a lower center of gravity of the vehicle, and a wider footprint creating a vehicle that is safer, and quieter while adding more interior space.
My press Loan for the week was the RX 500h with the F-Sport package. This F-Sport package is a specially designed package for the 2023 RX giving it a sportier, performance-driven look and feel. Under the hood, this hybrid F-Sport houses the all-new Lexus hybrid powertrain that epitomizes commitment to sustainability and performance. The front unit integrates a high-torque 2.4-liter turbo inline engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. There is also an inverter and an electric motor, with an eAxle rear unit that integrates a high-output electric motor, inverter, and reduction gearbox. Whew, what a mouth full to describe an engine and transmission configuration. Am I right?
Nobody wants to know how hotdogs are made, so let me give you the finished product. With an emphasis on fuel efficiency and power, this hybrid system provides both eco-consciousness and exhilarating performance, delivering an unmatched driving experience. The power plant is an inline turbo 2.4L gas engine that works in conjunction with two electric motors producing 367hp and 406 ft-lbs torque while getting 27-28 mpg combined per the Monroney. This unique power configuration allows the electric motor to provide low-end torque capability improving performance and quick acceleration. The turbocharged engine produces high torque throughout the entire rev range, delivering powerful acceleration even at higher speeds. The transmission
is a DIRECT4 drivetrain which is Lexus's advanced methodology for controlling high technology all-wheel drive systems by providing optimal power and acceleration to all four tires through the eAxles. This provides maximum grip and traction as needed whether surfaces are dry, wet, or snowy.
Hopping inside the F-Sport cabin, you will experience a nice balance of luxury and technology and notice the Lexus engineer's meticulous attention to detail. Premium materials such as suede-trimmed interior door trim, a perforated leather-trimmed steering wheel, leather upholstery, real wood trim, and aluminum pedals envelop passengers in opulence, creating an oasis of comfort.
One of the hallmarks of RX's success is its dependable safety features. For 2023, the all-new Lexus RX includes Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which provides additional features offered with the available driver monitor system, including: Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, Intersection Support and a new feature of Motorcycle Detection; All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with new Curve Speed Management (DRCC); Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA); and Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS). Available Advanced Park expands support for parallel parking. In addition to conventional back-up parking, forward-facing parking is now supported, enabling forward-facing/back-up exit.
The Lexus RX 500h F-Sport is truly a hit in my opinion. It is a nice balance of power, sporty styling, and luxury. If you are looking for a great daily driver that hits all the boxes of power, style, luxurious comfort and is extremely safe this is your vehicle. This ffth generation RX 500h F-Sport does the RX legacy proud and stands as a testament to Lexus' dedication to creating vehicles that elevate the driving experience to new heights.
