The first-ever Lexus Multi-Stage Hybrid carries the brand's luxury hybrid tradition forward into the foreseeable future.
As the most passionate expression of the Lexus brand, the eye-catching LC 500 coupe is set to receive significant key refinements to further solidify the connection between driver and machine. Not only will the vehicle get a reduction of nearly 22 pounds of unsprung weight, but its updated suspension will provide a smoother, softer stroke for a better connection to the road. Lexus introduced the world's first luxury hybrid fifteen years ago, and now the first-ever Lexus Multi-Stage Hybrid carries the tradition forward into the foreseeable future.
The LC 500h Multi-stage Hybrid System, like other Lexus hybrid configurations, teams together the gasoline engine with two electric motor/generators. The downshifting model on the 500h Multi-Stage Hybrid System has been updated by engineers for this model year to allow for smoother operation and more efficient acceleration out of tight turns. The LC 500h is powered in part by a compact, lightweight lithium-ion battery. Fitting neatly between the rear seats and the luggage compartment, this battery pack has a high-power density with its 84 cells producing 310.8 volts. The Multistage Hybrid System also provides more electric assist at lower vehicle speeds and enables the vehicle to operate with the gasoline engine off at speeds of up to 87 mph.
From its unique mesh grille to its unique tail light signature, the LC 500h is a comfortable hands-on experience. Using some of the world's most advanced technology while also relying on the judgment of a human hand, eye, and ear, Lexus achieves a refined quality and a flawless finish by employing the meticulously honed skills of Takumi craftspeople in order to achieve its luxury standards. This dedicated group of master craftspersons continue to cultivate incomparable skills and techniques that date back centuries and could never be replicated by a machine. The talent of the Takumi is one of the primary reasons that an array of models across the brand lineup exhibit such artistic expression.
Although being refined is an important quality in craftsmanship, a product is incomplete without the addition of more human, more instinctive elements that are not based on simple calculation.

Source: Lexus | LC 500h | An Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine utilizes D-4S direct fuel injection for optimum efficiency while the lightweight valvetrain with Dual VVT-i ensures ample torque across the engine speed range. Moreover, the system keeps the planetary-type continuously variable transmission from Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive and adds a unique four-speed automatic transmission. Working in concert, the two gearsets alter output in four stages to utilize the V6 engine across the entire speed range. In M mode, the two gearsets act together to provide the effect of 10 ratios, giving the LC 500h a highly engaging driving feel and allowing the driver to shift through the ratios with paddle shifters. In automatic mode, AI shift control matches gear selection to driving conditions and driver inputs. The Multistage Hybrid System allows for more electric assist at lower vehicle speeds, and it enables the LC 500h to operate with the gasoline engine off at speeds of up to 87 mph. The combined system output of the LC 500h is 354 horsepower. With the Multistage Hybrid System, the power from the V6 engine and the electric motor can be amplified by the 4-speed automatic transmission, generating much greater drive power when accelerating. The LC 500h uses a compact, lightweight lithium-ion battery. The battery pack fits neatly between the rear seats and the luggage compartment and has a high-power density, with its 84 cells producing 310.8 volts.
