This renowned compact crossover provides both travel range and zero-emissions.
The Hyundai Tucson, a renowned compact crossover SUV from Hyundai since 2004, continues to make waves in the automotive market. As the best-selling SUV model for Hyundai, it has garnered a global fanbase with over 7 million units sold. In November 2020, the fourth-generation Tucson made its debut in North America, boasting a long-wheelbase specification for an impressive 'compact' experience.
The Tucson offers a trio of powerplant options, catering to diverse driving preferences. The gas variant features a brand-new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Smartstream engine, delivering 187 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. For eco-conscious drivers, the hybrid version combines a 1.6-liter T-GDi engine with a 44 kW electric motor, generating 226 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque while achieving a remarkable 30 percent boost in fuel efficiency. If you crave electric power, the plug-in hybrid version offers a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a 13.8-kWh battery, granting you 33 miles of zero-emission driving for short trips.
My loaner for the week was the Limited AWD plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The PHEV is a great option for those consumers who want the flexibility and convenience of a gas vehicle for long trips in conjunction with a zero-emissions vehicle for short commuter or errand runs under 33 miles. The Tucson PHEV is currently in limited production, so before you run out to buy one, be sure to check and see if it is being sold in your state.
It's no secret I'm not a fan of fully electric vehicles yet, I prefer the convenience and fuel efficiency of hybrid vehicles over EVs and PHEVs, but I found the Tucson's EV range of 33 miles easily covers any daily errands or even short work commutes with only needing the gas engine for rapid acceleration. This powerpalnt also provides a total range of over 400 miles which is very respectable considering it's only an 11.1 gallon tank.
Though the PHEV Tucson loses a bit of legroom because of the EV component, I do like the supersized effect the compact Tucson provides with the longer wheelbase offering ample room in both rows for adults and plenty of cargo space for even the most ambitious outdoor adventurer or shopaholic. I am also a fan of the 10.25-inch digital flat-panel instrument cluster the engineers developed for the driver display as well as the 8” flat panel color touchscreen that looks and functions like a tablet. The look is clean without looking too futuristic and antiseptic. It did take some retraining to remember the radio volume was on the steering wheel and not a knob on the dash, but I can make that mental adjustment and adapt. To add a bit of spiff to the exterior look, my Limited had 19-inch alloy wheels, LED lights on both front and back, roof rails, and a panoramic roof.
After my week long drive, it was nice to be reminded why the Tucson is the top seller in the Hyundai fleet. The plug-in hybrid version will surely complement the line with its spacious cabin, smooth acceleration, and zero-emissions range. This Tucson, even as a PHEV SUV, is still fun to drive and a super value.
