My press loan for the week is the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado Crew LT 1500 Trailboss 4WD with the 3.0L Duramax turbo and 10-speed transmission. This is the second year for the Silverado mid-cycle refresh which included a new front-end design, as well as an updated interior. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was introduced in 1999 as the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Since that time, the Silverado 1500 has been a highly-popular and well-regarded pickup truck throughout its history because of its performance, capability, and reliability.
The Trailboss package was introduced in 2019 for buyers that wanted an off-road performance truck right off the dealer's lot. This year's model will include a 2-inch factory suspension lift, black off-road assist steps, black dual exhaust tips, and 18-inch black wheels with Goodyear Duratrac tires. That two-inch lift was just enough for me to watch the cooks an In and Out burger build my burger with fries and shake. The exterior styling was designed to provide a unique appearance with a bold, aggressive grille that is highlighted with the Chevrolet bowtie that is prominently displayed. The vehicle features squared-off fender flares and a raised hood with a functional air intake. When you pair those with the blacked-out exterior accents and Trailboss badging, they give the Silverado a distinctive and purposeful look that cause heads to turn in a suburban neighborhood, at the job site, or heading to that favorite off-grid fishing hole.
This is the first time the off-road Trailboss trim line has been paired with the Duramax engine. The 3.0L inline-six turbo-diesel Duramax engine features advanced technologies like a variable-geometry turbocharger, aluminum block, and cylinder heads that produce 305 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. All that technical engine talk translates to a diesel power plant that produces an impressive EPA rating of 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway for two-wheel-drive models, and 22 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for four-wheel-drive models, allowing the Trailboss to easily tow 9,500 pounds when properly equipped.
If you are the type of person who prefers to tow your all-weekend fun with a truck that is more outdoors adventurer than a suburban queen grocery getter then the Silverado Trailboss is probably something you should look at. And if you went that far, ask about the Durmax turbo, you won't regret it.
